Canoeing in Arusha National Park
Paddle the Momella lakes with giraffe on the bank and Mount Meru behind you.
There are no lions in Arusha National Park, which is why you can be on the water here. A guided canoe on the Momella lakes puts you at eye level with waterbuck, buffalo on the shore and flamingos on the shallows.
You paddle in stable two or three person canoes with an armed ranger and a canoe guide, on one of the small alkaline lakes below Mount Meru. The paddling is easy and no experience is needed.
Expect giraffe and zebra on the bank, waterbuck at the edge, hippo at a safe distance and a lot of birds: flamingo, pelican, heron and kingfisher. Buffalo often watch from the shore.
It pairs well with a walking safari or the Ngurdoto Crater viewpoint on the same day, and it is a gentle first day for anyone who has just flown in.
