Destination

Serengeti National Park

Endless plains, and the largest animal migration on earth.

The Serengeti is the safari most people picture: grass to the horizon, lions in the shade of a kopje, and, for much of the year, more than a million wildebeest on the move. Our guides grew up on its edge and know which valley the cats favour in which month.

Nearly 15,000 square kilometres of protected savannah run from the Ngorongoro highlands to Lake Victoria. The central Seronera valley holds resident lion prides, leopards along the river lines and cheetah on the short-grass plains year round.

The Great Migration circles the ecosystem in a loose annual loop: calving in the south from January to March, the western corridor and Grumeti crossings around June, and the Mara River crossings in the north between July and October.

We plan Serengeti days around light and distance rather than a checklist. Early starts, a long midday rest in camp, and afternoons where the guide follows what the morning showed her.
