Destination
Zanzibar
Where the safari ends: warm water, old town, and nothing to do.
Zanzibar is an hour by air from Arusha and the natural second half of a Tanzania trip. Stone Town for the history, the north and east coasts for the water, and as many empty days as you want after a week of early starts.
Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of coral rag houses, carved doors and lanes too narrow for cars, with a night food market on the waterfront and a long history as a trading and spice port.
The beaches differ more than people expect. Nungwi and Kendwa in the north keep deep water through the tide, so you can swim at any hour. Paje and the east coast draw the tide far out and the wind in, which suits kitesurfing and long flat walks on the sand.
Between beach days there are spice farms inland, the red colobus monkeys of Jozani Forest, dhow trips and snorkelling on the reefs, and the sandbank lunch that most people remember as Safari Blue.
