Ngorongoro Crater

A whole ecosystem inside the walls of an ancient volcano.

The crater floor is 260 square kilometres of grassland, swamp and forest ringed by 600 metre walls, and it holds one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. It is the most reliable place in Tanzania to see black rhino, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Ngorongoro formed when a volcano collapsed more than two million years ago, leaving the largest intact caldera in the world at roughly 20 kilometres across. Water stays on the floor year round, so the animals do too.

Lion, elephant, buffalo, black rhino and, less often, leopard share the floor with wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, hyena, hippo and flamingos on Lake Magadi. Maasai herders still graze cattle in the surrounding conservation area.

We descend at first light before the day-trip traffic, spend the morning on the floor, and lunch by the hippo pool. Overnight stays are on the rim, where the evening view is the reason people come back.
