Mto wa Mbu village tour

Banana beer, rice paddies and a great many tribes in one small town.

Mto wa Mbu sits at the gate of Lake Manyara and is one of the few places in Tanzania where people from a great many different tribes farm the same few square kilometres. You walk or cycle it with a local guide, and you eat well.

The tour takes in irrigated rice and banana plots fed by springs off the escarpment, a banana beer brewery, a Makonde carving workshop and a painting studio working in the Tingatinga style.

Lunch is usually a home-cooked Tanzanian meal with a family, and it is generally the best food of the week. The route is flat, so it suits most ages and can be done on foot or by bicycle.

It fits neatly on a Lake Manyara day and is a good change of pace between two parks.
