Tarangire National Park

Ancient baobabs, and the biggest elephant herds in the north.

Tarangire is two hours from Arusha and it is where most of our trips begin. The Tarangire River pulls animals in from a much wider area through the dry months, so a single afternoon here can be the busiest game drive of the week.

The park runs along the river valley south east of Lake Manyara. Baobabs stand across the ridges, some of them centuries old, and the elephants that shelter under them are the reason people know the name.

From June to October the river is the only reliable water for miles, and elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and eland concentrate along it. Lion follow the herds, and the swamps in the south hold python and a long list of birds.

It is a quieter park than the Serengeti and an easy first day. We usually take a picnic in and stay until the light goes soft, which is when the elephants come down to drink.
