Arusha National Park

Mount Meru, the Momella lakes, and the one park you can walk and paddle.

Arusha National Park sits under Mount Meru, 40 minutes from town. There are no lions, which is exactly why you are allowed out of the vehicle here: it is the best place in the north for a walking safari or an afternoon on the water.

The park runs from the Ngurdoto Crater through montane forest to the Momella lakes, a chain of shallow alkaline lakes that change colour with the algae in them. Mount Meru rises behind, and on a clear morning Kilimanjaro shows to the east.

Giraffe, buffalo, zebra, warthog, bushbuck and waterbuck are common, black and white colobus monkeys move through the forest canopy, and flamingos work the lakes. The absence of big predators is what makes walking and canoeing possible.

We use it as a first or last day, especially for families and for anyone arriving with a spare afternoon before the long drive west.
