Honeymoon safaris

A week that starts with lions and ends with nothing at all to do.

The classic Tanzania honeymoon is a safari followed by the sea: four or five days on the northern circuit while you still have the energy, then a flight to Zanzibar and a week of doing very little. Savanna Soul Safaris books the private dinners and the quiet rooms without making a performance of it.

Safari first, beach second

Do it in this order. Safari days start early and cover ground, and nobody wants that after a week of lying still. Ending on the coast means the last thing you remember is the water rather than a 5am alarm.

What we arrange quietly

A private dinner set up away from the main deck, a bush breakfast after the morning drive, a room with the view rather than the one by the path, and a balloon flight on the morning you want it. Tell us the date of the wedding and we will let the camps know.

Rooms worth the money

On a honeymoon the accommodation matters more than on any other trip, so this is where we suggest spending. A tented suite with a private deck in the Serengeti and a villa with its own pool on the coast will change the trip more than an extra park will.

Being left alone

Your vehicle is private and your guide reads the room. Some couples want her to talk all day, some want the radio off and an hour parked by a river. Either is fine, and you do not have to decide before you arrive.

Questions

Asked by people planning this trip

When is the best time for a honeymoon safari?

June to October is dry, green and busy, and the migration is in the north. January to March is calving season in the southern Serengeti and quieter on the coast. April and May are the long rains, when prices drop and some camps close.

How long should we go for?

Ten days is the comfortable minimum: five or six on safari and four or five on Zanzibar. Anything shorter and the internal flights start to eat the holiday.

Can you arrange a proposal or a vow renewal?

Yes, and we will keep it to ourselves. Tell us what you have in mind and which of you is not supposed to know, and we will work it out with the camp directly.

Do we need to fly between the safari and Zanzibar?

Yes. It is a short hop from Arusha or the Serengeti to Zanzibar, and it saves a full day of driving plus a ferry. We book it as part of the trip and your guide sees you to the check-in desk.
