Lake Manyara National Park

A narrow park between the Rift wall and a soda lake.

Lake Manyara packs groundwater forest, open floodplain and a shallow soda lake into a strip beneath the Rift Valley escarpment. It is small enough for half a day and varied enough that the half day is never dull.

The road in runs through dense forest fed by springs at the base of the escarpment, where blue monkeys and baboons are the first thing you meet. Past the forest the country opens onto floodplain and the lake shore.

Manyara is known for lions that rest in the branches of acacias, though they are never a promise. Elephant move through the forest, hippo sit in the pools, and flamingos work the shallows in their thousands when the water level suits them.

It fits neatly between Tarangire and the climb to the highlands, and the escarpment view over the lake on the way out is worth the stop on its own.
