Chemka hot springs

Clear warm water under fig roots, an hour and a half from Arusha.

Chemka, also called Kikuletwa, is a spring-fed pool in the middle of dry country: startlingly clear, warm year round, and shaded by the roots of old fig trees. It is where people go to swim after a week of early starts.

The water comes up from underground off Kilimanjaro and stays warm all year. It is deep in the middle, shallow at the edges, and clear enough to see the bottom of the pool from the bank.

There is a rope swing, somewhere to change, and grilled food and drinks on site. Go on a weekday morning if you can; weekends bring crowds from Moshi and Arusha.

This is a good use of a spare day at the start or end of a trip, especially with teenagers.
